"Grendel, I come for you!" Beowulf is one of my favorite Anglo-Saxon heroes, battling monsters such as Grendel and the dragon.

Beowulf, greatest of norse/germanic heroes next to Sigurd the Volsung. Glad to finally see someone depict him with black hair, seems like everyone screws that detail up that he was the only man among his crew with black hair
Joshmoe93 Featured By Owner Aug 26, 2013
they actually honored Volsung in Skyrim by naming a Dragon Priest after him

Very cool. I enjoyed reading Beowulf for junior English; everyone else wasn't as entertained, sadly. :(

Definitely beats the CGI film version of Beowulf. Movie was okay, loosely followed the poem but still good...

Wow! I love the overall anime-esque look of history's first monster-masher here. Beowulf was an awesome story- great work!=D

cool. I saw one of the old Beowulf movies some years ago, where he fought Grendel. It was cool and full of action.

This is such s great job, I love the way the face and the terrain look, and the clouds seem really real! I am reading this in my English class, and I thought I'd look him up. I'm glad I did!!!

Great job. :aww:

Kudos and then some...

Did they just HAVE to kill him in the story?
Ragade Featured By Owner Oct 9, 2007
Yes. The dragon was more or less eternity, and no man, no matter how bad ass, can truly fight man's fate of death. He was old, and still so foolishly proud to go out and fight the dragon...

I have nothing against artistic license, but I do have something against historical inaccuracy. And whilst it may be true that it is fantasy, it also takes place in an actual historical historical period, and an actual historical place, people who, for the most part, were created to reflect people and life at the time it was written (somewhere around the 6th to 9th century). And your comment about what I said about the armor seems to go against every bit of historical evidence we have. True, there are many different armor, but plate armor wasn't even in use at that time, and even if it was, the Vikings wouldn't be wearing it. The oddest thing about all this has to be the fact that the illustrator seems to be taking this better than you are.

One more thing:

10. Grendel wasn't a demon.
Tricrax Featured By Owner Dec 5, 2007
Demon is also a commonly used umbrella term for mythological creatures, typically synonymous with monster. There have been some texts in which Djinn, Imps, and Ifrits were referred to as demons.

Grendel, being even more malevolent and monstrous than those three creatures, could easily be considered a demon.

Also, I do know the traditional meaning of a demon, being one of the Nephilim, but I also know that demons have come to be used to describe monsters of any type in literature.

Where to start...

1. That's not Beowulf.

2. Beowulf had a beard.

3. Beowulf was a viking, therefore had little, if any armor, and that would be chain mail.

4. That sword is too big.

5. The sword's blade is far too wide. The tang would snap under it's weight.

6. the sword's pommel is too small.

7. In the epic poem, it took four men to carry Grendel's head, so large and heavy as it was.

8. Beowulf is not a Saxon poem, it is an Anglo-Saxon poem.

9. Beowulf was a Geat, at that time, meaning he was a Norseman. No Viking ever dressed like that. They were far too poor.

Spend a few years studying Nordic history and try again.
elegaer Featured By Owner Oct 11, 2007
Agree with every point!
furan-san Featured By Owner Sep 2, 2007  Professional Digital Artist
Erm, yeah. You corrected the artist of two things that he misplaced like: Grendel NOT being a demon and the Anglo-Saxon mythology.
Now as an artist I say:
1. Beowulf may have a beard as depicted in many paintings - the artist decided not to? Then that’s Beowulf in his design.
2. He was a Viking and had little or any armor?! Do you know what FANART means?!
3. Sword too big?! Never played Final Fantasy 7, Ninja Gaiden or Soul Calibur III?!
4. For #4/5/6, one word: FANTASY ART
5. So what if four men sucked in strength. This guy is tough and would probably carry his horse instead of riding it.
6. No man in the world was or will be as huge as Grendel anyways.
7. For richer or poorer - armors make it happen.

"Spend a few years studying Nordic history and try again." Good for you! I can tell you can be a great person to talk with on a theme like this. But know this, not many ppl know the Nordic history or even look for the information when doing something of it. That is what fantasy art is all about. This artist did a great job and he colors and draws better than we do.

Beowulf is actually coming as a movie this September. Are you going to criticize the movie and the director as you did him?
The poem is 3,183 lines long (it was torture to read but very interesting) and I doubt that the movie will have everything like the poem describes.

Open your mind a little will ya. Not everything has to be done by the book…or how the legend goes.

An interesting take on an amazing character. Most people don't give Beowulf a chance because of how old it is and the fact that its English version can be a difficult read. But its an amazing story and your illustration is an excellent tribute to it. :+fav:
