Ah, Charles the Hammer. Carollus Martellus. Carlos Martel.

I've always loved this guy's story. Really, even if he didn't save Christendom as he claimed afterward to have done (and he may have been right, we never know) he DID manage to halt a previously unbeatable army that had exploded out of the Arabian peninsula in a wave of conquest. He and the Byzantine Empire were pretty much the two shields of Europe from Islamic conquest.
