Dana by GENZOMAN Dana by GENZOMAN
a pic of arround september of 2007 or so :)

In Irish mythology, Dana is also know as Danu (Old Irish), is most commonly known as the Mother of the Celtic Gods, In Celtic Mythology, the Goddess Dana was the mother Goddess of the Tuatha Dé Danann (The Tribes of Danu) however her presence is also felt in Hindu mythology. She is the Goddess of rivers and goddess of primordial waters, giving her name to dozens of rivers such as the Danube and the Don. Even a mountain on the face of Venus has been named after this great Goddess.

Dana’s children, upon arrive in Ireland have to struggle against their enemies, the evil Fomorians, whose own “Mother Goddess” is Domnu. Significantly, Domnu not only means “the world” but “the depths” of the earth.

Irish epics contain many episodes of the struggle between the Children of Domnu, representing darkness and chaos, and the Children of Danu, representing light and order Moreover, the Children of Domnu are never completely overcome or eradicated from the world. Symbolically they are the world. The conflict is between the waters of heaven and the base reality of world.

I like a lot celtic myths, lol, I love U2, sometimes I think I must born in Ireland :p

It's pretty mind boggling how some nations that are leagues away from one another could have such similar deities and myths, even before widespread sharing of information!

I forgot where i saw this, I think this was national geographic channel or national geographic magazine, or some other educational resource. But yeah this could probably be how some of their religions and cultures are very similar :D

Sorry, can't get over that. "Dana"? Really? Not something mystical, like Artemis or Athena or Nefertiti, but "Dana"? That's one of the least "god-like" names I can think for a goddess. It's like naming a goddess Heather or Phoebe or Rachel.

And she's supposed to be Queen of the Irish Gods, with a name like "Dana"? I'm sorry, but if I was an Irish god, I wouldn't listen to a goddess called "Dana". Imagine if Zeus was named "Benjamin", could he have ruled the Greco-Roman gods well?

Dana become a popular name. that´s why is "common" now, but was indeed popular for the folk tradition. :)
BTW, Rachel and Phoebe are common for the folk tradition too. [link] :)

Yeah, but notice how Hades never uses her when he's about to kick ass: "Onward, Ice Titan! Onward, Fire Titan! Onward, Wind Titan! Onward, Rock Titan! Onward, the mighty Minotaur! Onward, Ares, god of war! Onward...Phoebe!". It just kills the momentum.

And by the way, I don't know any Olympian named "Rachel". Again, most likely because she would stick like a sore thumb against Artemis, Hera, Athena, Aphrodite, Gaia, Eris and Hecate.

I'm just saying, even if Dana was a valid name for a goddess back then, it just doesn't sound "god-like" enough for me. All the other Irish gods have names like Arawn, Morrigan, Arianhod or Anu, while she's stuck with "Dana". It's like in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", when you see this powerful medieval wizard, and you expect him to have a cool wizard name like Gandalf or Rastlin or Xellos, but it turns out his name is "Tim".

Anyway, Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

I love your work, especially the celtic and norse stuff, also the south and central american stuff has opened up new worlds to investigate. I also love the lady pirates. I used to love the greek stuff when I was a kid(trojan war/odyssey was a favorite game of me and my twin brothers 2nd-4th grade), i have fallen in love with it again. Also love the leshy and slavic hunting/magic godess. I hope when I finally meet the goddess she looks a lot like one of your paintings!
