Hi guys! this time another old pic (arround 2006-7 or so) based on a myth: The Hassassin. I love the Middle East stories and setting, is a very rich background on visuals and culture. Did you know the word "assassin" is thought to be originate from here? History aside, I tried to go for a more videogame/ninja touch here, pretty much like ninja gaiden/prince of persia stuff :)

hope you like it!

The Hashshashin (also Hashishin, Hashashiyyin, or Hashasheen from which the word assassin is thought to originate), was the Persian designation of the Nizari during the Middle Ages. The Nizari, or Hashshashin, as they were designated by their enemies, was very active between the VIII and XIII centuries. they became famous on the XI century by their strategic activity of targeted assassinations against political, military leaders or kings. During this period, was their power splendor.

Much of the current lore surrounding the Assassins roots from Marco Polo, who claimed to have visited Alamut in 1273 during his journey east (a visit widely considered fictional since the stronghold had been destroyed by the Mongols in 1256). Polo wrote that future assassins were subjected an initiation rite in which they were drugged to simulate "dying," and later awakened in a garden flowing with wine and served a sumptuous feast by beautiful virgins.

In the other hand, Farhad Daftary in The Assassin Legends: Myths of the Isma'ilis says: "At the same time, within the crusading-culture of a pre- and early-modern Europe, the Syrian and Persian Nizaris took shape as Muslim mercenaries who murdered their victims while high on opium or hashish. If this propagandist concoction of a 'stoned' assassin fails to fit the complex reality of the discipline and training required for committing what was always an explicitly political act, the popular notion of Nizaris as a community of killers also denies their rich, multivalent culture."

Appendix:
Actually, to this day and age, is still say in Arabic 'Hashasheen', which means 'addicts' or 'those who are on drugs', singular 'Hashash' (doing the hasheesh/ hashish - weeds). However; the word, its meaning, usage, spelling root, and origin is purely Arabic, not Persian. But it is common there. (thanks to :iconrewayah: for this info)

in my history class we pronounce the word he-shan-s and the word is spelled hessian's. perhaps i got the history mixed up but i love the way you use vibrant reds and make it seem as though the blood is transfered from the people to the blade and the ground.
