Medusa by GENZOMAN Medusa by GENZOMAN
Hi there guys! Love Medusa. I remember it was the first mythological monster that caught my mind, first when I saw the old Clash of the Titans flick (stop motion rocks!) and then in castlevania ganes (still my favorite enemy along legion). I have a couple of versions more of Medusa on the gallery but I tried to do something diferent with hair/snakes compo on this one.
I hope you like it :)

Photoshop CS/bamboo/7 hours and a half/music:  Clock Tower - Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow…

Medusa (Greek: Μέδουσα (Médousa), "guardian, protectress") was a monstrous chthonic female character; gazing upon her would turn onlookers to stone. She was beheaded by the hero Perseus, who thereafter used her head as a weapon, until giving it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield. In classical antiquity and today, the image of the head of Medusa finds expression in the evil-averting device known as the Gorgoneion. She also has two gorgon sisters. The three Gorgon sisters — Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale — were children of Typhon and Echidna, in each case chthonic monsters from an archaic world.

In a late version of the Medusa myth, related by the Roman poet Ovid, Medusa was originally a beautiful maiden, "the jealous aspiration of many suitors," priestess in Athena's temple, but when she was raped by the "Lord of the Sea" Poseidon in Athena's temple, the enraged goddess transformed her beautiful hair to serpents and she made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn a man to stone.

You can share my stuff! Thanks :)

the weird thing is that her power to turn someone into stone was dependent on the target fearing her...

Because of what happened with Medusa, I can't really forgive Athena.  Little Ms. "I-Turn-Rape-Victims-Into-Horrifying-Monsters."  I'm aware of the version of the myth where it was consensual, but that feels more like something a victimizer would say so as to blame the victim.

Anyway, great job with this.

though most gorgons(medusa and her sisters) are said to hideous some say that was their beauty that turned their victims to stone. This is a good portrayal of that belief.

Beautiful. The colour choice is a-stone-ishing (get it?) and it looks like you've paid very much attention to detail while making this, which is great. Your other works look nice as well. Keep up the good work! ^_^

So.. Let me get this straight: Poseidon raped this poor girl; a priestess of Athena, thereby defiling the temple & insulting the Goddess herself.. Yet, rather than punish the perpetrator, Athena (the so-called "Goddess of Wisdom" no less..) decided it would be a better idea to add insult to injury by turning Medusa (the innocent victim) into a disgusting freak of nature... Facepalm

GEEZ!!! OMG No wonder the Greek gods were widely considered to be the biggest bunch of A-holes in all mythology! Angered

Man.. Never thought I'd say it, but I actually feel rather sorry for 'ol Medusa now.... Petting is sensual!
katkatir Featured By Owner Jan 12, 2015
The point was that Gods > Men.  The sex of the person meant nothing.
PeteTheGrouch Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2015
..Not entirely sure what you mean by that reply - are you simply saying the attitudes of the so-called "Gods" were meant to reflect the generally misogynistic mindset of that period, where women were basically considered no more important than cattle..? I could quite readily understand that if the "punishment" had been inflicted by a male deity; however, we're talking about Athena here - supposedly one of the least douchebaggy of the Greek pantheon.. The fact that she would so cruelly curse a loyal follower of hers; one who had technically done nothing wrong... Well, to me it just beggars belief! WTF?!

Sheesh.. No wonder Kratos wanted to kill all those f**kers! Stabbed with a Fork!
katkatir Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2015
God or Goddess is irrelevant:  The Greek Pantheon cared little for modern feminist ideological concepts, only themselves as Gods and Goddesses as a whole.

Athena cared nothing for Medusa's gender, she cared that a lowly human, her priestess or not, came to her about an advance of a God.

This absolutely disgusted Athena.

There's Gods and Goddesses, and then there's us.  And they didn't give two cents about us regardless of gender.

You may find it interesting that "Medusa" translates to:  "Female sovereign wisdom".
PeteTheGrouch Featured By Owner Jan 21, 2015
Hmph.. They should've changed it to something more practical - like: "Never worship a bunch of narcissistic A-holes"!! Smoking
